My son turned 5 last month and boy was he celebrated! I mean, over the top, at least in my book. I made a total of three chocolate cakes for this kid.
First was the party at his school, then a small family celebration at home that afternoon, then pizza and cake with his t-ball team (he and one of his teammates share a birthday). A week later came his party with friends. We decided to do a party at a nearby ranch that included making castings of animal footprints, a naturalist led hike and a surprise archery lesson at the end. It was the perfect day! He invited just a few friends so it wasn't crazy and chaotic. Just a fun big boy party. The archery lesson at the end was a super fun surprise, made better only by a gift of his own bow from his grandfather.

For favors I gave each child a copy of this really cool book, wrapped in a map because the boy loves maps.

Instead of a big elaborate food spread I made lunch boxes for each kid with some of the birthday boy's favorite foods. For the parents, a big spread of cheese, baguette and lemonade because really, what's better than that? My son had big ideas about his cake. One morning before his birthday he presented me with a drawing of what he wanted his cake to look like. It was a square cake with a giant walking stick poking out of it. Apparently he thinks I work for Ace of Cakes. Ha! We talked about it and I explained that I wasn't really a good enough cake designer to pull that one off. So he thought for awhile and decided that a cake that looks like a hiking trail would be just great. Phew! Much easier! I made a round cake (my specialty), chocolate of course, and dusted the top with cocoa powder. Dirt! Then a few chocolate rocks which I had stashed away in my pantry, a few green gumdrops (leftover from gumdrop cookies at Christmas time) on a bamboo skewer and it was starting to look pretty woodsy and hiking trail - like. The finishing touch were footprints made by a toy dinosaur. Perfecto! A hiking trail cake.

Happy Birthday to my big boy! I can't believe its already been five years!!
